Trout fishing in the North State is pretty damn good right now. Conditions are as good as we can hope for. Flows on the Lower Sacramento River are up to 10k and should remain here for the summer months. This is a great Summer flow opening up the option for long, productive float trips. Redding through Cottonwood has delivered us some great fishing the past few weeks. The Lower reaches are poppin with color and a very fun option right now. This is the time of year that the fish will eat a very wide variety of food – from big stoneflies to small mayflies and everything in between. You can get them in some very skinny water right now too..
Aside form the big tailwater, the smaller freestone streams are cranking as well. The Upper Sac, McCloud and Pit river are fantastic walk and wade options. Expect some good dry fly and dry/dropper on the McCloud from now through mid-June. Stoneflies on the surface with a short leash dropper is a very fun way to fish this river this time of year. Expect to primarily catch your fish on the Upper Sac and Pit below the surface.. There will be a few small windows throughout the day to get fish looking up on these rivers though. Right place right now it can happen. The Fall River will start to hit it’s stride by late May and is an excellent option through the Summer months.
